Studio Brief 3- Designing a Typeface

We were each given a word that we had to base our typeface ideas off, mine was ‘independent.’ As a studio we went round other people’s words and tried to give them ideas on how they could develop their word into a full typeface.  We went away and I tried to look to look at how to work my word into a typeface.

After a crit session with ideas flowing back and forth we stumbled upon the idea of ‘independent’ being used politically, maybe in terms of independence, like the current situation with Spain and Catalonia, or with the UK and EU. To further this I started looking at war and how this can be related.

Looking deeper into the subject of war and WW2 specifically, I began looking at Nazi Propaganda posters, and their Blackletter type they used. Blackletter had been basically forgotten about for years by most other countries but Germany used the typeface right into the 1920’s. Once under Hitler’s rule, he brought the typeface back as ‘the people’s typeface,’ and began using it in his parties’ propaganda.
