Looking at texts from Susan Sontag “regarding the pain of
others.’ Her ideas about the imagery of suffering we see in the media are
interesting. How she questions whether the feelings were supposed to feel are
justified or even right to feel. She also speaks how thes images can affect a
person in multiple ways, for example she states “As objects of contemplation,
images of the atrocious can answer to several different needs. To steel oneself against weakness. To make oneself more numb. To acknowledge the existence of the incorrigible.”
The texts are a great way of re-thinking what we think we
already know about the imagery we see in the media. The main point I took away
from the texts is how numb people become to imagery that is meant to make us
aware of issues going on in the world.
