Olt Aicher Grids & Pictograms

We were tasked with looking deeper into the grids and pictograms by Olt Aicher. The German graphic designers work for the Olympics are some of his most renowned works with the re imagined look of the olympics not only so drastic but a positive step forward in Germanys history, straying away from the previous visual identity of the games, having been exploited by the Nazi regime for their own ends.

The identity aimed to characterise the West Germanic democratic, open society viewpoint.

The Aicher 45 Degree Grid allowed for consistent symbolism throguhout the olympics identity, with each symbol looking similar while allowing a distinguishable design for each sport. The 45 Degree saw the possibility of horizontal, vertical and diagonal element to be present within the symbolism as oppose to just the horizontal and vertical of a conventional grid.
