Final Publications: Studio brief 2

This is my final publication for studio brief 2. The aim was to try and convey the message of ignorance people have to real world issues and how trivial issues are thought of more importantly. It seeks to do so as well as showing how the media influences these viewpoints.

Final Poster Cellphone Symphony

These are the final two posters submitted for Studio Brief 1. The posters are designed to be a visual representation of sound distorted through digital medium.

I was originally going to submit a final set of three, working as a set. I decided to go with the previous two as one experimented more with physical methods of distortion as well as digital. I regret not submitting the original set of three as looking back I prefer them, they also work really well together and with further development could have been used as a single free flowing poster split into three.

Book Binding

We had an induction on book binding in preparation for our publication brief. It was good to learn how to bind not only for the current brief but as a future skill. These binds were simple and were easy to do. It would be good having another opportunity to bind which would allow me to try something more complex.

Susan Sontag: Regarding the pain of others

Looking at texts from Susan Sontag “regarding the pain of others.’ Her ideas about the imagery of suffering we see in the media are interesting. How she questions whether the feelings were supposed to feel are justified or even right to feel. She also speaks how thes images can affect a person in multiple ways, for example she states “As objects of contemplation, images of the atrocious can answer to several different needs. To steel oneself against weakness. To make oneself more numb. To acknowledge the existence of the incorrigible.”

The texts are a great way of re-thinking what we think we already know about the imagery we see in the media. The main point I took away from the texts is how numb people become to imagery that is meant to make us aware of issues going on in the world.

Poster designs

Some of my poster designs. I wanted to try continuously create poster designs, by designing back to back to back i wanted to see what sort of results i could end up with and how different my ideas and development would be. The idea to constantly design helped me develop my final design, as coming up with different designs were coupled with incorporating design ideas from initial ideas

Instagram Research

Just a few of the instagram pages i've been looking at for inspiration. I really like the contrasting styles between them all.

Poster Book Research Material

I purchased a book from Graphic Design Festival Scotland of all 140 posters seen in the exhibit in 2017, the book has been great for idea generation and experimentation. It has been good for research as it includes interviews from designers at the festival.
