We were tasked with creating a Logotype for one of the
featured artists or exhibitions at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Having been
there and seen the pieces first hand already, I went away and did some more
research about some of my favourite pieces in the exhibition.
I chose to create logotype for the Occasional Geometries
exhibition, curated by Rana Begum. First off, I looked at some of my previous
research from the last brief, which also looked at the occasional geometries exhibition.
I looked more into Rasheed Araeen and more of his work, and how his geometric
forms are influenced by traditional Islamic patterns. With his works such as “Zero to Infinity” and “Rang Baranga,” There is a clear reference to thee
patterns, but also to Araeen’s
background in engineering. The pieces are made of strong, angular geometric
forms, more specifically triangular forms, which are known for being the
strongest structure to build with.
I looked into Rana Begums personal work as well, because I wanted to
create a logotype for the exhibition, I wanted to create a typeface that was
based around geometric forms, without being too literal. Looking at Rana’s work I was able to gather ideas on geometric form and perspective
and how I could incorporate both into my designs.
We were given a rule that the logotype initially must be based off
one of the 6 typefaces by Massimo Vignelli, which can be found in the Vignelli
Canon. I chose Futura because not only Is it a commonly used, well known
typeface, it’s a fully geometric typeface, making use
of both Circular and angular forms.
