The initial plan for the layout was to plan the layout using walls in to reflect the cassette reels, with work displayed on the outer and inner walls of both rooms. We quickly realised that not only would the exhibition space feel cramped, but the lighting of the exhibition pieces would be poor and the free flowing nature of the layout may not work as well as we had thought.
With the group liking the revised general layout of the exhibition space we discussed the inclusion of a ‘introductory’ room before the public entered the rest of the space. The room would be an opportunity to communicate the ideas of the exhibition and hand out the catalogues and any pieces that come with that. It would also reflect the idea of a cassette being a ‘front, middle and back’. In the middle (the main exhibition space) we wanted to communicate nothing but the music and the music themed pieces.
After a few revisions we decided I pitched the final floor plan to the group (see below) and they all agreed it worked well and communicated the nature of the exhibition.
The exhibition would be laid out to reflect the tape reels within a cassette and would flow naturally from left to right, aided by wayfinders, the public could navigate the exhibition from A side to B side, room to room and exit in a free flowing manor.
