AIGA Eye on Design Articles

I wanted to look deeper into the relationship between music and graphic design and whether learning more about that connection could help influence my design ideas. I found two particularly good articles features on AIGA that explain the connection between the two.

The first (seen above) article is a really good piece on the connection between both visual design and music and how the two have always inherently gone hand in hand and complement one another perfectly. It goes onto talk about the importance of graphic design in music now more than ever before in grabbing the viewers’ attention. In a world where music streaming is so prevalent, making music almost disposable, a single, album, artist or advertisement needs to be engaging and intrigue the consumer enough for them to listen to the music, especially for a consumer new to a genre. This is something important that I want to get across in my work. I want to be able to entice the viewer into listening or reading more about the band in a way that communicates both their style and current design trends, communicates the band and content simply and affectively.

The second article (above) article explains how important visual design is to a song or musical genre and how the visual representation of the music can influence the consumer. The article is a really good read and continues to explain how the importance of the connection between visual design and music is not only just as important as it used to be, but even more important in this current world of social media and the need for great visual identity across albums, socials, promotional material for any music artist. The article communicates the need for consistent design that properly communicates the artist and the music they produce which is something I totally agree with. Making sure the visual identity for the band is clear, consistent and correctly communicates and relates to the work they produce is vital and something that is really important for me.
