OUGD505 SB1 Research

We were tasked with creating a map that would be featured in an exhibition down at Colours May Vary. The idea was to create a map of anything of your choice. I begin to look at various projects of mapping pieces, straying away from conventional geographical maps, or looking at ones that were executed in a more design focused, creative and abstract way.

The Burger Map - Danilo Campos

One of the most interesting and aesthetically pleasing maps I looked at was the “Burger Map.” The map is made up of different burgers from around America for the restauraunt “The Burger Map.” The map and restaurant idea, inspired by the book Hamburger America, is a culmination of the owners favourite burgers from around America. The map is simple in design, acting as a map and menu for the restaurant, but is unique and a really good idea. The piece mixes classic geographical maps with menu style design for a unconventional design and use for a map. Typographically this is one of my favourite designs ive looked at at closest to the style I wish to implement and work in. I love the fresh take on the map and the menu and the merger of the two. I want to try implement this typographic style and take inspiration from the idea. The map is more of a record and homage to the owners favourite burgers and their attempt at celebrating each one, keeping each of the traditional cooking methods alive and true to original recipe. I like the idea of mapping something as a record of an event, or time rather than a factual, there is there, over there is that, type of map.

Topographic Maps - Studio Us

Another mapping piece I looked at was the topographic maps by Studio Us for workspace and furniture manufacturer and textile company Kvadrat on their new collaboration and new fabric release. The new fabrics were uses in this piece to build up the topography maps in layered pieces. I really like the idea of layering in these pieces and want to take that idea and try implement that into my design, maybe using the layering as a representation of time, or just to see how various pieces come together when merged. The bright bold colours of the fabric work well and look incredibly clean, though this is not my style or really the direction I want to take my own map.

Acid House Love Blueprint - Dorothy

Acid love blueprint is a map of the comprehensive history of acid house and rave culture in the style of an old school circuitry blueprint. The piece is unusual and really cool. The map is a perfectly organised, overlapping, layered circuit that works really well. I like the abstract nature of the map, I like how something has been taken out of context and put into another.
