I started off with some rough sketches of various initial ideas I had in mind. I focused my idea initially on something I did often, or at least have done recently, somewhere and something that would be easy to access and document that could give me various different outcomes or various other ideas that stem from these processes.
My first rough idea was to document and map the movement of
a pint glass on a table across the duration of a pint/drink. Id noticed
whenever going for a drink that some people tend to move their glasses a lot,
some drink faster than others, and some hardly touch the glass at all, I knew I
was someone who constantly moved and played with the glass subconsciously
during the course of a pint. I documented each new placement of the glass as
well as when the glass is stationary, depicted with a larger, weightier ring.
Although this idea was interesting, it felt it would only be interesting to me
as it was my movements that I was mapping.
My second idea was to document the movement of drinks from the bar to the customer and away. This rough sketch was over a slightly busy period in the bar and shows the start of the pint at the respective pump being pulled (depicted by the rings) and their eventual movement in whatever direction the customer walked away from the bar in. This made for some interesting visuals but in terms of a final piece, it was rather bland and wasn’t too creative. I did like the layering of the various directions and the patterns they created when almost woven together. I was interested in the layering of that sketch and wanted to see how that would work and could be implemented going forward.
Third was a continuous line drawing of a variation of idea one. The map would document the placement of the glass as well as its movement, as it swirls, moves up and down and around the table, but all in a 2D space. I found this sketch interesting, it was definitely more abstract and a more interesting documentation. Maybe if the idea was expanded and collected using multiple people and then layered the outcome would be more interesting.
